I have a new kitten - what is best for its dental hygine?
For a new kitten, the best dental hygiene routine is to start gently and early so they get used to having their mouth handled.
-
Brush their teeth regularly: Use a small, soft cat toothbrush or finger brush and toothpaste made specifically for cats. Never use human toothpaste.
-
Introduce it slowly: Start by gently touching their lips and teeth with your finger, then gradually introduce the toothbrush. Keep sessions short and positive.
-
Use cat-safe toothpaste: Cat toothpaste comes in flavours designed to be appealing to cats. Don't force brushing if your kitten becomes distressed.
-
Fresh water every day: Make sure your kitten always has access to clean, fresh drinking water.
- Get their teeth checked: Ask your vet to look at your kitten's teeth during their routine vaccinations/check-ups. They can also show you the safest brushing technique.
A good goal is daily brushing, but if your kitten is still getting used to it, even a few gentle sessions each week is a great start.
If you notice bad breath, red or swollen gums, bleeding, drooling, difficulty eating, or loose/broken teeth, have your vet check them.
