My Puppy doesn't like baths - how can I make it better for him?
Many puppies dislike baths at first, and the key is to take it slowly and make bath time positive.
5 tips to make bath time easier
-
Introduce the bathroom first – Let your puppy explore the bath or shower area while it’s dry. Give them treats and praise so they start to associate it with good things.
-
Use lukewarm water – Avoid water that is too hot or too cold. Start with just a small amount of water and gently wet your puppy rather than suddenly spraying them.
-
Keep the first baths short – Don't aim for a perfect bath straight away. A few calm minutes is better than a long, stressful experience.
-
Use treats and reassurance – Reward your puppy throughout the bath with small treats and plenty of calm praise. A non-slip mat can also help them feel more secure.
- Make drying comfortable – Have a warm towel ready before you start. Gently towel-dry your puppy and keep them somewhere warm until they're completely dry.
Most importantly, never force your puppy into the bath. If they're becoming very frightened, stop and try again another day with a shorter, gentler session. With patience and repetition, most puppies can learn that bath time isn't something to worry about.
