Spring time - Cat Owners Checklist

Grant Winter

We have put together some practical spring tips tailored for cat owners:

  • Stay on top of shedding
Cats naturally shed more in spring, so regular brushing helps remove loose fur, reduce hairballs, and keep their coat healthy.
  • Increase parasite prevention
Fleas and ticks become more active in warmer weather. Use vet-recommended treatments and check your cat’s coat regularly.
  • Watch for seasonal allergies
Cats can react to pollen and dust. Look for signs like sneezing, itchy skin, or watery eyes.
  • Keep litter trays extra clean
Warmer temperatures can increase odours and bacteria, so scoop daily and change litter more frequently.
  • Encourage hydration
As it gets warmer, make sure your cat always has access to fresh water. Some cats may prefer running water from a fountain.
  • Schedule a spring health check
A vet visit is a great way to review vaccinations, weight, dental health, and overall wellbeing.
  • Refresh grooming routine
In addition to brushing, check ears, trim nails, and keep an eye on skin condition.
  • Be mindful of open windows and doors
Cats are more curious in spring—use screens or take precautions to prevent escapes.
  • Check for toxic plants
Many spring flowers (like lilies) are dangerous to cats. Make sure your home and garden are pet-safe.
  • Support dental care
Spring is a good time to restart or improve tooth brushing routines and introduce dental treats if needed.
  • Provide mental stimulation
With more daylight, cats may be more active—offer toys, climbing areas, or window perches for enrichment.
  • Monitor outdoor safety (if your cat goes outside)
Be aware of increased wildlife activity and ensure your cat is identifiable with a collar or microchip.
  • Wash bedding and favourite spots
Freshen up your cat’s sleeping areas to remove fur, dust, and allergens.
  • Watch weight and diet
Increased activity may change your cat’s appetite—adjust portions if needed to maintain a healthy weight.

These simple steps can help your cat stay comfortable, healthy, and happy as the seasons change.
